Taking a walk on a sunny Sunday afternoon, taking my time, meandering through a labyrinth of succulents and cacti. What did I know of succulents before living in Los Angeles? I know I'm a broken record. I've lived here for over a decade now, and yet it's the Pacific Northwest that's still in my bones. I want to let LA into my bones too. These Dr. Seussian plants are vividly beautiful but foreign. Striking to look at but prickly. Can we be friends? What about family?
People talk about chosen family—can family actually be chosen? How much is choosing and being chosen? By what unspoken exchanges, mundane actions, number of years, cellular reactions, or magical incantations does one build the bonds that transform one from stranger to family?
